About Gumbo Limbo Nature Center

Take a break from the city bustle to enjoy a walk on our boardwalk, count the thousands of tropical fish in our aquariums, relax in our butterfly garden, or climb to the top of Jacob's Outlook, our observation tower.

Founded in 1984, Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is a unique cooperative project of the City of Boca Raton, the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District, and Florida Atlantic University.

As a beacon for environmental education, research, and conservation, Gumbo Limbo’s 20 acres on the protected barrier island provide refuge to many varieties of plants and animals - some rare or endangered. It also represents a commitment to protect our natural resources by our staff, volunteers, and the organizations that comprise the Center.

This is the place I take visiting guests. I’ve been coming here for many years. Very well run and the volunteers there are very knowledgeable. It’s free to enter but you can give donations. If you’re not going to do the walking trail, a half hour is normally enough time here. You can see the turtles in the rescue center, there’s giant tanks of various fish, including the giant eel. It’s fun to see the feeding at approximately noon

I highly recommend touring the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center!! Its donation based and you can meet Morgan, Lefty, and Ms. McGibbons, permanent rescued sea turtle residents who have been rehabilitated and are swimming and living with friends. A few of them got attacked by sharks (or so they think) and they are missing fins. But they are incredible! 20-30yrs old approximately. The location preserves the beautiful tropical trees that I was missing from other beach locations in southern Florida and they have a nice walking trail and it just feels so calming and peaceful. They had a variety of marine life and researchers were working too and we could watch them! I got to see quite a few sea horses too! I absolutely loved the butterfly garden, observation deck, and enjoyed speaking with the staff and volunteers who educated me on the marine life. The other perk is that it’s located right across the beach in Boca Raton.

This place was so nice! The trail was beautiful and we saw many fish, crabs, and butterflies! The aquarium was nice and the staff had a lot of information the share about all of the marine life they had there! You can tell they love the animals here!! It’s an amazing place to take the family and it’s free!!

First time going! We had a great time! Loved the aquariums and all of the employees were so knowledgeable! Beautiful views from the top which has steps or ramps to walk up. Only complaint was parking, being the awesome location it's at, that probably would not be able to be changed or made bigger. It's free. Great place to bring kids or out of town guests.

This site provides a worthwhile experience for everyone young and old. This center offers walking trails, an observation deck (state of the art construction and access), butterfly garden (seasonal, weather dependent), and a multi facited central area containing an aquarium, turtle haven (rescue), nature classes and study center (university sponsored). Quite a nature learning facility. The observation tower has a nice water and foliage view and resting spot for the weary walking up ( 2 ways) this 4 story tower. To my surprise, all free (accepts donations) thanks to Boca Raton. There's not much to see on the trails unless you love trees. Animal signs but no animals in sight. Amphitheater there but I don't know for what. Free parking but limited so first come first served. Week day visits would probably provide a better experience. Bathrooms and water is just about it. A very cool Nature Center.
